The American frontier has been labeled a myth regarding the boundary that divides civilization and wilderness by some historians and writers. Regardless of whether it is mythological or not, the nostalgia of the Old West cannot be denied.
It’s a fact that many mothers felt a lot of pride as they watched their young men grow up to be cowboys. These early cowboys didn’t live an easy life. They were responsible for driving large herds of cattle (usually around 2,000 head per herd) to Abilene, Texas. The Kansas Pacific Railroad had established a center in Abilene that became the railhead for shipping cattle East.
The cattle had run wild and multiplied mightily while Texans were away from home fighting for the Confederacy. Gathering these cattle into herds was a tough challenge for the cowboys, but when they delivered a herd to the Kansas railroad they were handsomely rewarded for their hard work.
These cowboys were young men who were lightweight and wiry. They were loyal to the task they had signed on to accomplish and represented America’s newly adopted spirit of independence and freedom.
